Bristol’s THE MAZI PROJECT – Help deliver meal kits to young people in need!

BRISTOL’S THE MAZI PROJECT LAUNCHES CROWD FUNDER TO HELP MORE DISADVANTAGED YOUNG PEOPLE

As food insecurity amongst disadvantaged youth in the UK increases during cost-of-living crisis, The MAZI Project – a CIC striving to challenge food inequality amongst young Bristolians – launches crowd funder #recipe4change to raise funds for a new van.

  • BRISTOL CIC, THE MAZI PROJECT, LAUNCHES CROWD FUNDER #RECIPE4CHANGE FOR NEW VAN AFTER DEMAND FOR MEAL KITS GROWS TO AN ALL-TIME HIGH
  • THE MAZI PROJECT’S CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES ON WORLD HUNGER DAY, WHICH AIMS TO AMPLIFY THE VOICES OF THOSE FACING HUNGER AND HELP MAKE ZERO HUNGER A REALITY
  • FINANCIAL AND FOOD INSECURITY AMONGST 16–25-YEAR-OLDS INCREASING IN COST-OF-LIVING CRISIS
  • STREET ART POSTERS, DESIGNED IN COLLABORATION WITH RISING ARTS AGENCY AND THE MAZI PROJECT’S YOUNG PEOPLE, WILL GO UP ACROSS THE CITY FROM SUNDAY

On World Hunger Day, 28th May, The MAZI Project, a Bristol Community Interest Company (CIC) striving to challenge food inequality amongst young Bristolians, is launching its crowd funder campaign #recipe4change. The crowd funder will aim to raise £30,000 to purchase a new van which will enable them to reach more young people in need.

After a 30 per cent increase in demand since March 2023 amid the cost-of-living crisis, The MAZI Project has set its sights on purchasing a new van to allow them to double the number of meals delivered to individuals who need support, from 80 to 160 young people.

Founded on the principle of empowering communities through sustainable solutions, The MAZI Project, which recently announced Maisie Williams as its ambassador, has been making waves with its dedication to tackling food insecurity and promoting social equality. By using locally sourced food from small scale producers transformed into delicious and nutritious meals, The MAZI Project has already made a significant difference in the lives of many young people across the city.

Melanie Vaxevanakis, Managing Director and Founder of The MAZI Project, said: “We believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious meals, regardless of their circumstances. With the support of our community, we can make a significant difference in the lives of even more individuals. The new van will enable us to increase our meal deliveries, ensuring that no one goes hungry.”

In collaboration with Bristol-based Rising Arts Agency, a community of young creatives aged 16–30 mobilising others for radical social, political and cultural change, The MAZI Project has worked with five of its own young people to create a series of street art posters, helping to bring awareness to the crowd funder campaign. The posters, which will be showcased in key locations around the city from Sunday, will draw attention to the difference food delivered by The MAZI Project can make in a young person’s life, at a time when young, disadvantaged people are often having to choose between the cost of rent and food.

The MAZI Project invite individuals, local businesses, and organizations to contribute to their cause and be a part of this transformative journey. To donate, head to: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/be-the-recipe4change-with-the-mazi-project

The MAZI Project likes to dream big. If they exceed the £30,000 target, an extra:

£10,000: Secure a year’s van insurance, maintenance costs and a wonderful van driver.

£20,000: Help with refurbishing costs for a new, larger permanent space for the organisation.

£30,000: Secures rent for a year for a new, larger permanent space, helping them support even more young people in need.

£40,000: Secures rent for a year for a new, larger permanent space and contributes towards energy bills

After a five-year hiatus, the incredibly talented and inspirational Project Zulu children’s choir from the Madadeni Township in South Africa is set to return to the UK in May for a three-week tour.

The 20 schoolchildren, aged from eight to 15-years-old, will be entertaining audiences across Bristol, Bath and the South West, from 20 May until 11 June.  They will perform a range of traditional Zulu songs and dances, including gospel songs and gumboot dances in full Zulu attire.

This will be the first time the nine boys and 11 girls have travelled abroad and they, along with four accompanying adults, will be staying with local host families in Bristol for the duration of the tour.

Money raised during the trip will be split equally between the two schools – Mntimande Primary and Jobstown Primary – and used to build new classrooms to reduce overcrowding.

Sinaye Phakathi, choir member from Jobstown Primary School, said: “I enjoy singing in the choir because it makes me feel comfortable and it gives me hope. My favourite song is ‘Ngiyakuthanda Jesu’ (I love you Jesus). I’m excited to meet my family in Bristol in the UK.”

Ndomiso Zungu works at Mntimande Primary School and says: “I am a music teacher and I am also a choir conductor for Project Zulu Choir. The choir are so, so excited, you can even see that in our rehearsals. They want to go and showcase their talents. They want to go and sing, they want to go and show people there how do we sing, how do we dance. They want to show them our music.”

The choir tour is part of Project Zulu, a UWE Bristol initiative which has been working in partnership with South African township schools to support the delivery of educational development projects since 2012, with the most recent volunteering visit by students and staff taking place in February 2023.

The first Project Zulu choir tour took place in 2013 and continued biennially until it was halted by the pandemic. Now, with a mixture of ticketed and free events including busking which is sure to stop shoppers in their tracks, the children hope to wow audiences with their infectious love of music once again.

Ben Knight, Project Zulu founder and Senior Lecturer at UWE Bristol, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming back the Project Zulu choir to the UK for the fifth time. The 2023 choir tour will have a big focus in and around the South West to ensure all our local supporters have the chance to celebrate their return, 10 years on from the first tour, and attend their outstanding performances.

“There’s no doubt the choir’s extraordinary musical talent will draw in the crowds, but the tour’s success is also vital to the ongoing development of the children’s schools and their education. Both schools currently have in excess of 60+ pupils per classroom making effective learning a challenge.”

In addition to the concerts, the choir will visit eight schools in and around Bristol during the tour, offering cultural exchange opportunities and musical workshops. These schools are all fundraising to support the choir; the money raised by the Bristol school pupils will go directly back to schools in South Africa to help build their classrooms. This is a unique opportunity for these schoolchildren to meet the beneficiaries they are fundraising for.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to see this group of talented young people perform, but it’s also part of a much wider initiative which brings so many benefits to the children and schools in South Africa, as well as Bristol schoolchildren, our students and staff,” added Naomi Steeds, Project Zulu Coordinator.

“Please do give the Project Zulu choir a warm welcome to the South West and get your tickets booked before they sell out.”
