A sixth man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 19-year-old in Bristol.

Since the moving appeal by mother of Eddie Kinuthia 6 arrests have been made but no one has yet been charged over Eddie Kinuthia’s death.

Eddie King Muthemba Kinuthia suffered multiple stab wounds during an attack on Grosvenor Road, in St Pauls, on 21 July and died in hospital.
Of the five men previously arrested, three are on conditional police bail, one was released under investigation and another is no longer a suspect.

The sixth man is in his 20s, from Bristol and is in police custody.

Press Release Ujima received from Avon & Somerset Police from last Thursday 10th August 2023:

Request to share appeals for information about the death of Eddie King Muthemba Kinuthia.

Dear community network member,

On Thursday, we held a news conference to support the investigation into the murder of 19-year-old Eddie King Muthemba Kinuthia in St Pauls in Bristol.

It’s now more than three weeks since Eddie was stabbed to death and there is a feeling the media have not given this tragic case the coverage it deserves. Eddie’s mother Irene bravely decided to put herself front and centre of the appeal, in the hope that people will feel moved to come forward and provide evidence which can help secure charges in the case. Irene’s statement was incredibly emotional and her courage to take this action while her grief is so raw is humbling.

As well as inviting our traditional media partners to the news conference, we invited community and youth leaders / influencers, as many in the St Pauls community knew and loved Eddie and have been greatly affected by his murder. Their support in spreading the appeal is essential for us to secure justice for Eddie’s family. We would also be grateful for your support in spreading the word.

We recognise many people in this community don’t trust us to keep them safe, due to a legacy of trauma in their interactions with police, and this may be why people are reluctant to come forwards and support the case. We are working hard to rebuild that trust and confidence but know it will take time.

Siren Bristol….

Siren Bristol – ” Never Ever has there been a more eclectic, inclusive, intergenerational, diverse, vibing, incredible, electric audience!”

By Miranda Rae – Station Manager/Presenter – Ujima Radio

From the moment you arrived at Siren Bristol you knew you were in for a great night, on entering the huge outdoor Amphitheatre space in the city centre of Bristol, you walk straight into Arena 2 promoting local artists and front and centre a huge Ujima Banner!

Ujima's CEO Faada Sojie at Siren Bristol 2023
Ujima’s CEO Faada Sojie at Siren Bristol 2023

For the 3rd year running organisers of Siren Bristol delivered an incredible event, this time lasting over 3 days and including a sell out performance with international superstar Sean Paul and a Hospitality Drum & Bass All Dayer on Saturday. Depending on your age and personal tastes you could argue which was the better day but kicking off with an incredibly clever and well thought out performance by Fabio & Grooverider and the Outlook Orchestra they covered 30 years of DnB from the conception of Jungle with classics like DJ SS and Lighter to Shy FX’s Original Nuttah, at which point had their been a roof on the Amphitheatre it would of been blown off.  It was incredible to see such a huge & diverse age range, literally from 18 to 80 years old and every single person in that crowd was a lover of the jungle and dnb vibes, be that an OG from the 90’s, Noughties or bang up to date, there was something for every body. Walking around the crowd it seemed like every single person knew the lyrics to every single song & the atmostphonere was electric!  And this was just night 1.

Roni Size

Massive kudos to Fabio & Grooverider who took time to acknowldge that jungle really did start in Bristol and Ujima’s very own Lawd Skrew could arguably be one of the main influencer’s & instigators. Mercury Prize winners: Roni Size, Krust, Die, Dynamite MC, Onallee & of course Ujima’s very own DJ SUV aka Reprazent were producing jungle to a standard never heard anywhere before and although the history books will tell you one story to the original crew, we all know it started in Bristol with reggae dub plates being mixed over techno tracks, but that’s a whole other story for another day…a personal highlight was seeing the 3 brothers who have had such a major influence on the Bristol music scene, again Lawd Skrew, The General and Roni Size, and I promise one day we will share that story with you (big love to Iva).

But for now the Ujima Family would like to say a huge thank you and congratulations to the Siren Bristol fam and especially Tom Hoyle and the Plaster Crew who went out of their to make us feel so welcome and support the Ujima cause! An incredibly well organised and delivered 3 day event that left the city buzzing and hoping that Siren Bristol will return for a 4th year…but will the continual city centre development allow for this, only time will tell.

Reverend Palmer & Peacemakers Patrol appealing to Parents and Grandparents to step up to the plate to save our young people’s lives.

Peacemakers Patrol make appeal!

Yet another young man stabbed to death in St.Pauls. These stabbings must STOP🫸We are appealing to Parents and Grandparents to step up to the plate to save our young people’s lives..IT could be YOUR CHILD OR GRANDCHILD, Nephew, Niece or Cousin NEXT!! Let’s get proactive meet on the Green in St. Pauls Tuesday 25th at 1pm (weather permitting) for a Patrols vigil for the lives lost through knives, and to say a firm 🚫⛔NO to knives on our streets…

By

Reverend Dawnecia Palmer – Chief Commissioner PEACEMAKERS Prayer and City Safety Patrols.🙏🏽

A vigil will be held in St Pauls this week to remember victims of knife crime, following a young man’s tragic death. The 19-year-old, who has not yet been named by police, has been described in the devastated community as a “lad who was very loved”.

He was from St Pauls and hundreds of tributes have been paid in his memory on social media, with many of his friends saying they cannot believe he is gone. Prayers were held at the Elim Church on Jamaica Street over the weekend, and there will be another opportunity tomorrow (Tuesday) to pay respects at the green in St Pauls*.

The teenager was found injured on Grosvenor Road just after 11pm on Friday night (July 21), but sadly could not be saved despite being taken to hospital. A post-mortem examination on Saturday confirmed the cause of death as knife wounds, according to Avon and Somerset Police.

Full police update on Sunday as murder investigation launched

A murder investigation has been launched by the force’s Major Crime Investigation Team, who have already eliminated one person from their enquiries – a teenager arrested near the scene on Friday night. He has been charged with an unrelated offence of possessing an offensive weapon.

Dawnecia Palmer, who has worked for decades to fight crime in the St Pauls community, spoke of her shock after the young man’s death. She runs the Peacemakers Prayer and City Safety patrols to help prevent violent crime, but said there had been less need recently as the situation seemed to have stabilised.

However, Rev palmer said: “Now this has shattered that bubble.” She has organised a vigil at the Green from 1pm tomorrow in St Pauls, weather permitting, saying: “These stabbings must stop.”

She said the vigil’s aim is to remember “lives lost through knives, and to say a firm no to knives on our streets.” She appealed to parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles to help raise awareness of the dangers of knives to “save our young people’s lives”.

Another member of the community in St Pauls told Bristol Live: “This was a lad who was very loved here, everybody knew him liked him. The whole community is in absolute shock, people are very upset, saying ‘no, not him’.”

Eastville councillor Lorraine Francis also paid tribute, tweeting on Saturday: “Awoke to hear that another youths life has been taken in St Paul’s. Sad times for the community and his loved ones. As a cllr and human being I send a heartfelt please for peace.”

Increased police patrols

A police spokesperson said yesterday: “There will be an increased police presence in St Pauls as the investigation continues. Our neighbourhood teams will be carrying out uniformed patrols as a contact point for the community.

“We’re still in the early stages of our enquiries and are exploring all avenues of investigation. We still need any information the community can give. You can contact us by calling 101 or through our website. Please give the reference 5223175298.

“Alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers 100 per cent anonymously. You won’t be asked your name and cannot be traced whether you ring 0800 555 111 or use the anonymous online form.”

*An earlier version of this article incorrectly named College Green as the location of the vigil. The location is in fact the green in St Pauls and we wholeheartedly apologise for the confusion

Tribute to Nelson Mandela!

Today marks Nelson Mandela’s 105th birthday.

“It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”

Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician. He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. He won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1993, along with South Africa’s president at the time, F.W. de Klerk, for having led the transition from apartheid to a multiracial democracy.

One of his most famous quotes: Speech from the Dock quote by Nelson Mandela on 20 April 1964:
“I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die”.

Another quote: “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

Mandela spent 27 years in jail. Mandela was fighting against apartheid, but he was also fighting for something: a better world, in which the freedom, justice and dignity of all were respected. After 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela was freed in 1990 and negotiated with State President F. W. de Klerk the end of apartheid in South Africa, bringing peace to a racially divided country and leading the fight for human rights around the world. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.
