RIEP Harry Belafonte

Harry Belafonte, Actor, Writer & Activist has sadly passed away.

Born March 1, 1927 – sadly passed away April 25, 2023. He was an American singer, actor and activist, who popularised calypso music with international audiences in the 1950s. Belafonte is one of the few performers to have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT), although he won the Oscar in a non-competitive category. He earned his career breakthrough with the album Calypso (1956), which was the first million-selling selling LP by a single artist.
Belafonte was best known for his recordings of “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)“, “Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora)“, “Jamaica Farewell“, and “Mary’s Boy Child“. He made his final screen appearance in Spike Lee‘s BlacKkKlansman (2018).
Portrait
Belafonte considered the actor, singer, and activist Paul Robeson a mentor, and he was a close confidant of Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. He was a vocal critic of the policies of the George W. Bush and Donald Trump administrations. Belafonte acted as the American Civil Liberties Union celebrity ambassador for juvenile justice issues.
Belafonte is said to have married politics and pop culture.

Robeson opposed not only racial prejudice in the United States but also western colonialism in Africa. Belafonte refused to perform in the American South from 1954 until 1961.

In 1960, Belafonte appeared in a campaign commercial for Democratic Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy.

Kennedy later named Belafonte cultural advisor to the Peace Corps. Belafonte supported Lyndon B. Johnson for the 1964 United States presidential election.

Belafonte, Castro & Hip Hop:

Belafonte was a longtime critic of U.S. foreign policy. He began making controversial political statements on the subject in the early 1980s. At various times, he made statements opposing the U.S. embargo on Cuba; praising Soviet peace initiatives; attacking the U.S. invasion of Grenada; praising the Abraham Lincoln Brigade; honouring Ethel and Julius Rosenberg; and praising Fidel Castro. Belafonte is also known for his visit to Cuba that helped ensure hip-hop‘s place in Cuban society. According to Geoffrey Baker’s article “Hip hop, Revolucion! Nationalizing Rap in Cuba”, in 1999, Belafonte met with representatives of the rap community immediately before meeting with Castro. This meeting resulted in Castro’s personal approval of, and hence the government’s involvement in, the incorporation of rap into his country’s culture.

Jean Joseph is a London-based visual artist and cultural facilitator, born in Dominica. Her practice taps into influences that cross continents; Africa, the Americas, her place in Britain. Joseph’s paintings are often narrative-based and layered in combinations of mixed/plastic media, often accentuated with collage, metal, wood or text. This methodology enables experimentation and scaling – an unhindered approach to dimensions and materiality, creating constructions and embedding signifiers. She has a background in spatial design and a broad interest in the built and natural environment and subsequent human geography – specifically anthropogenic effects. Often, she navigates the middle ground between dimensions to interweave stories; the societal and historical. At times, these take on fully sculptural forms.Joseph first exhibited her layered works focusing on disappearing Caribbean architecture at Tricycle Gallery in 2002 in Recycle Redeem, a joint show. She has since exhibited widely – most significantly, ‘We’ve already paid – Journeys & Kinship’ launched in 2010 at arc Gallery North London, a gallery she was involved in establishing. This body of work is a narrative on the human transatlantic trade, envisioned in Elmina Fortress on the Ghanaian coast. Her practice has comprised writing, curating and working with various West African artists who are based in the UK or on the African continent. She has hosted events for creatives, mentored in the community, facilitated art-focused and learning workshops, and delivered community-centred projects with institutions, such as the Museum of London and London Borough of Brent Arts & Libraries and Archives. As a co-facilitator, she was one of a group of artists interacting with workers at McVities biscuit factory in Something Different, an immersive residency supported by Create London and local development partners. In 2019 Joseph co-founded EARTHworks [Artists] Collective, aiming to address the lack of intergenerational, wellbeing in creativity, and support for older artists/participants. As well as continuing her practice and exhibiting, she has worked on a range of art projects; mentoring within the arts, exhibition development, such as ‘Redefining Balance’, the work of Zimbabwean artist, Tafadzwa Gwetai, a show presented online in December 2020 to January 2021 with co-founder Gaynor Tutani. This project continues to gain further interest, and in its next iteration will form part of an academic/creative partnership.

Joseph wrote, curated and participated in ‘Fragments & Visibility’, a group show on the EARTHworks platform at University College London Hospital’s gallery space, appreciated by both medical staff and patients. The exhibition exemplified their ethos on wellbeing as a core objective of the Collective’s vision.

Joseph currently works out of her studio within the Second Floor Studios & Arts Community.
