Jean Joseph is a London-based visual artist and cultural facilitator, born in Dominica. Her practice taps into influences that cross continents; Africa, the Americas, her place in Britain. Joseph’s paintings are often narrative-based and layered in combinations of mixed/plastic media, often accentuated with collage, metal, wood or text. This methodology enables experimentation and scaling – an unhindered approach to dimensions and materiality, creating constructions and embedding signifiers. She has a background in spatial design and a broad interest in the built and natural environment and subsequent human geography – specifically anthropogenic effects. Often, she navigates the middle ground between dimensions to interweave stories; the societal and historical. At times, these take on fully sculptural forms.Joseph first exhibited her layered works focusing on disappearing Caribbean architecture at Tricycle Gallery in 2002 in Recycle Redeem, a joint show. She has since exhibited widely – most significantly, ‘We’ve already paid – Journeys & Kinship’ launched in 2010 at arc Gallery North London, a gallery she was involved in establishing. This body of work is a narrative on the human transatlantic trade, envisioned in Elmina Fortress on the Ghanaian coast. Her practice has comprised writing, curating and working with various West African artists who are based in the UK or on the African continent. She has hosted events for creatives, mentored in the community, facilitated art-focused and learning workshops, and delivered community-centred projects with institutions, such as the Museum of London and London Borough of Brent Arts & Libraries and Archives. As a co-facilitator, she was one of a group of artists interacting with workers at McVities biscuit factory in Something Different, an immersive residency supported by Create London and local development partners. In 2019 Joseph co-founded EARTHworks [Artists] Collective, aiming to address the lack of intergenerational, wellbeing in creativity, and support for older artists/participants. As well as continuing her practice and exhibiting, she has worked on a range of art projects; mentoring within the arts, exhibition development, such as ‘Redefining Balance’, the work of Zimbabwean artist, Tafadzwa Gwetai, a show presented online in December 2020 to January 2021 with co-founder Gaynor Tutani. This project continues to gain further interest, and in its next iteration will form part of an academic/creative partnership.

Joseph wrote, curated and participated in ‘Fragments & Visibility’, a group show on the EARTHworks platform at University College London Hospital’s gallery space, appreciated by both medical staff and patients. The exhibition exemplified their ethos on wellbeing as a core objective of the Collective’s vision.

Joseph currently works out of her studio within the Second Floor Studios & Arts Community.

Save Bob Marley Beach in Jamaica!!

Free and Public access to Bob Marley Beach, along with the health and integrity of the local ecology, are all under immediate threat!

Help save one of the world’s most beautiful landmarks spiritually and physically!

Not many of you would know about the beautiful natural haven at the foot of Sugar Loaf Hill, 9 miles outside Kingston, Jamaica. This beach area has a long-standing Rastafarian history and presence. It was occupied by Bongo Gabby (also known as Natty Dread), father of Rubba aka Norman Stephenson. Rubba is a well known and loved artist, dancer and drummer and is calling for our help. The Crowdfunder has been running for months for so far only raised £500!  Come on guys, lets help and share this story far and wide.  Ziggy and Cedella Marley are now both behind this campaign too.  Rubba’s father, Natty Dread and the patriarch of the Ancient Nyahbinghi order who, along with Mortimer Planno, was responsible for teaching the ways of Rastafari to Bob Marley through mentorship. Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer all lived here with Bongo Gabby, creating music that has inspired so many people on this planet. The Wailers were all stalwart supporters of the longstanding Rastafari settlement, in existence since the 1950s.

Free and Public access to Bob Marley Beach, along with the health and integrity of the local ecology, are all under immediate threat by an outside investor determined to build an exclusive luxury hotel. This appeal is to defend our land ownership rights, ensure the whole beach remains open for everyone’s use, not just the select few.
Please sign and share the online petition:
Please donate and share the crowdfunder:

Find out more when Rubba joins The Word with Miranda this Friday 21st April between 4-6pm live on Ujima Radio!

We must “Get up, Stand Up” to stop the inequity caused by outdated post-colonialist laws that let commercial tourism overrule the rights of the public of Jamaica and the protection of its natural environment.

Jah Shaka – Zulu Warrior – Sound System legend has passed away.

Soundsystem legend Jah Shaka has died.

A regular here in Bristol and at the legendary Teachings In Dubs Sound system Clashes, the lost of  Jah Shaka will be greatly missed. The system pioneer was born in Jamaica, part of the post-Windrush wave of Caribbean immigration which so enriched this country. Based in South East London, he melded the Rastifarian term for God with the legendary Zulu leader to become Jah Shaka, spearheading one of the city’s most popular sound systems.

A by-word in cultural excellence, Jah Shaka paid supreme attention to sound, giving his system a boost that others lacked. Tapping directly into Jamaican culture, he also looked to the UK, becoming a focal point for African-Caribbean communities in London and beyond.

A key player in bass culture, Jah Shaka featured in seminal 1980 film Babylon, and stayed true to the spiritual elements inherent within dub and roots reggae even as Jamaican music strayed towards the more lavish colours of dancehall and ragga.

An inspirational figure, his influence – both direct, and more subtle – arguably changed the face of British music. Grime pioneer Wiley, for example, recalled sitting outside a Shaka dance in the 80s, feeling the Earth rumble under his feet.

Countless producers, DJs, and MCs worked with Jah Shaka over the years, testimony to his spirit, and his ability to draw the best out of those around him.

News of Jah Shaka’s passing was confirmed by a number of sources.

Peter D Rose from Smith & Mighty & More Rockers said: “Was an honour to tour with him around Japan as More Rockers in 1997. Truly an end of an ERA”.

Peter will be doing a tribute show on Ujima, watch this space for more information

Jumpin’ Jack Frost added: “The king of Kings has left us. The greatest soundman that ever lived.”

Farewell, Jah Shaka – enjoy your next journey.
